Push for Ubuntu on Dell machines worldwide
Written by kuahyeow the 29 Feb 08 at 09:11. Global category: Installation. Implemented
With Ubuntu on Dell machines in the USA, I'm sure this means better boot times, hardware integration, sound, network are all nice and good.

Ubuntu should really be pitching to be the default install (an option for the customer) on as many PCs as possible.

Do not set the Ubuntu CD-ROM as a Default Repository for the Synaptic
Written by Iamreck the 6 Apr 08 at 04:45. Global category: Installation. Implemented
I found it very frustrating when I first got into Ubuntu, and was looking around at the Packages to install, that I had to have the installation CD in my computer. Especially since it was a laptop and I didn't have my CD Drive in.

I eventually found out how to remove it as a repository source.

It should not be set as default, or perhaps, if it isn't there, Synaptic should go and look on the internet. Which it doesn't.

Graphical OS installer that actually works reliably
Written by elanthis the 28 Feb 08 at 18:15. Global category: Installation. Implemented
The LiveCD installer is slow - horrendously slow - and unreliable. The only meaningful difference between the LiceCD installer the old graphical installer is that the LiveCD installer takes forever to boot, fails to work on a far wider range of hardware, crashes more often, and lets users get a very bad first taste of Linux.

The alternative installer is also buggy and fails too often, probably due to getting far less testing. About 50% of the systems I try to use the LiveCD installer on fail, and about 25% of the systems I try to use the alternative installer fail. These exact same systems could install older versions of Ubuntu with the old installer just fine, and can install Fedora, FreeBSD, and Windows XP just fine. The new installers Ubuntu has been using are utter crap.

Please reinstate the primary preferred install medium to be a regular graphical installer like every other sane OS uses, one that actually works reliably and without requiring 6+ minutes just to boot the CD, and relegate the LiveCD to the useless gimmick bag where it belongs.

Developer comments
In Hardy you can install without booting into the Live environment.

Ubiquity istaller should work on 800x600 and lower resolution
Written by terenyi the 28 Feb 08 at 23:52. Global category: Installation. Implemented
I tried to install both 7.04 and 7.10 on an older pc, and found that the 'Forward' button in the installer was inaccessible. A scrollbar when necessary would be awesome!

Network install
Written by ailean the 29 Feb 08 at 01:41. Global category: Installation. Implemented
A bootable CD or USB to let you install Ubuntu over the Internet selecting the programs you need rather than the default install. What is needed can be installed more quickly.

Update: already exists https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/Netboot

Direct install from CD
Written by ekast808 the 3 Mar 08 at 07:37. Global category: Installation. Implemented
create a graphical installer app, similar to anaconda on fedora, and allow an install directly from CD, rather than booting to the LiveCD first, and then having the option to install.

For the noobs in Linux, solutions like Wubi-installer are extremely important in order to be able to experience a new OS without worrying about installation problems and boot-managers
