Universal installer standard
Written by dennistm the 3 Mar 08 at 11:49. Global category: Installation. Won't implement
Please create a universal installer that will work on all distro's of Linux and that has a creation package.

I am thinking of the MSI files and software like Install Shield for creating the MSI's.

Currently using make of shell scripts just to be sure that an installer will work on all distro's is a little troublesome.

My opinion of this is that it will take Linux from hobby OS to a usable OS for all users.

Include Avant Window Navigator (AWN) by default
Written by CydeSwype the 28 Feb 08 at 23:59. Global category: Installation. Won't implement
In much the same way that Compiz got included as part of the default install (and got a lot of attention) AWN should be included (for those who can run it) as it adds an additional level of polish. Would help woo some Mac users probably too.

Installer should never overwrite MBR without permission.
Written by curtdodds the 29 Feb 08 at 23:55. Global category: Installation. New
Twice now, while installing ubuntu, my MBR has been overwritten. A simple option to not install grub, or to
install to the root partition would be welcome.

For existing multi-boot systems this is a real time killer.
Took me three days to recover first time. Second time was
last night. Haven't recovered all the partitions yet.

Solution #2: When Grub is alread installed, install grub in the boot sector
Written by Id2ndR the 14 Feb 09 at 17:26.
Case : grub is already installed on the mbr to boot and grub directory in installed on an other partition.

What we are doing is to install Ubuntu on an other partition.

Solution : install grub in the BS (BootSector) of the new partition and create a new entry in the existing grub's menu.lst file to chainloader.

Install without reboot
Written by ximen the 29 Feb 08 at 21:30. Global category: Installation. Already implemented
I mean? there should be a normal ability to install Ubuntu without LiveCD e.g. from iso or even directory. Generally such ability exists now, but it should be easier and it will be great if there will be appropriate GUI.
