Create a "works with Ubuntu" logo for hardware   forum
Written by marvo the 3 Mar 08 at 12:39. Global category: Others. Implemented
Whenever users plan to buy new hardware for their ubuntu machines, they first have to search the web to find informations about kernel/driver support or incompatibility issues.

It would be really helpful if a sticker on the outside of the box of a scanner/printer/usb-dvb-tuner/mp3(ogg)-player/digicam/... simply said "works with ubuntu" or "designed for GNU/Linux" to guarantee that the product runs "out of the box" with Ubuntu or other Linux distributions.

Avoid Fsck Forced Irritation

spec
Written by amar the 28 Feb 08 at 14:28. Global category: System. Implemented
It is very frustrating when you get caught out after 30 boots and the system does a full check. Especially if you are about to give a presentation or you just need to read one bit of information. The Ubuntu team have done a great job of speeding up the boot time but this irritation undoes all the good work.

Possible solutions and further explanation:

Developer comments

This is implemented in Hardy Heron.
You can press the escape key to cancel the disk check.

This change was part of a more global set of changes to usplash, you can read more about it here : https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UsplashPolishSpec

Previews or thumbnails in file chooser   forum
Written by jimmux the 28 Feb 08 at 23:46. Global category: Look and Feel. Implemented
Too often I have to select images with cryptic file names from a file chooser. Because I can't see the images I typically have to open the folder I am browsing separately so I can find image I am looking for, remember the cryptic name, and return to the file dialogue to select the file I want.

This could be easier if their was an option to view thumbnails, or to at least preview the image.

Developer comments
File preview is now in Hardy.

Push for Ubuntu on Dell machines worldwide
Written by kuahyeow the 29 Feb 08 at 09:11. Global category: Installation. Implemented
With Ubuntu on Dell machines in the USA, I'm sure this means better boot times, hardware integration, sound, network are all nice and good.

Ubuntu should really be pitching to be the default install (an option for the customer) on as many PCs as possible.

Better release notes for Ubuntu 8.04
Written by Ubuwu the 24 Mar 08 at 14:59. Global category: Others. Implemented
Ubuntu’s goal is to be the most popular desktop OS for humans. But new versions of Ubuntu, like most Linux distros, are still marketed towards Linux geeks. They’re concerned with technology, trumpeting version numbers and drowning out the actual things you can do with their software.

We’re picking on Ubuntu specifically because it has higher goals than most distros - it’s Linux for human beings, not Linux for hackers. Unfortunately, the release announcements have forgotten what humans care primarily about: themselves.

That website seems to be down, but here is the cached version on google:

This desktop tour, linked from the ubuntu.com frontpage, should be much more "Human-friendly"!

Ubiquity istaller should work on 800x600 and lower resolution
Written by terenyi the 28 Feb 08 at 23:52. Global category: Installation. Implemented
I tried to install both 7.04 and 7.10 on an older pc, and found that the 'Forward' button in the installer was inaccessible. A scrollbar when necessary would be awesome!

Give focus to filename input in gnome File->"Save as" dialog
Written by oleksiy the 4 Mar 08 at 11:53. Global category: System. Implemented
When you click "Save as" menu item in gnome application a dialog windows appears and you naturally start typing new name but that field doesn't have focus and you have to click it. It would be perfect to give focus to the name field automatically.

Create a "How Can I Help?" site
Written by webhamster the 29 Mar 08 at 08:54. Global category: Marketing. Implemented
I think, a lot of people like to help with ubuntu development, but they don't know where to start. This includes not only programmers but also designers, music composers or just the normal ubuntu user.

So how about creating a website "howcanihelp.ubuntu.com" where everyone (except for C/C++ programmers ;-) ) can find out how to contribute?

Examples:
PHP Programmer -> help with Brainstorm Development, someproject.ubuntu.com needs a new Website, ...
Music Composer -> (don't know where this should link)
Graphic Artist -> https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork
Foreign Language Native Speaker -> Translate Subtitles at screencasts.ubuntu.com,...
Beginner Ubuntu User -> (don't know if we find something for them :-) )
Advanced Ubuntu User -> Help people at IRC #ubuntu, https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WikiToDo, join the Documentation Team...
Marketing Expert -> ...

and so on!

Color Coded Update Notifier   forum
Written by drewtown the 28 Feb 08 at 23:29. Global category: System. Implemented
I think it is important for the update notifier to be color coded to stress the importance of security updates. Red updates could signify that there is an important security updates while all other updates could stay the original orange color.

Developer comments
A red exclamation mark is shown instead of the standard orange icon if there are security updates.

Do not set the Ubuntu CD-ROM as a Default Repository for the Synaptic
Written by Iamreck the 6 Apr 08 at 04:45. Global category: Installation. Implemented
I found it very frustrating when I first got into Ubuntu, and was looking around at the Packages to install, that I had to have the installation CD in my computer. Especially since it was a laptop and I didn't have my CD Drive in.

I eventually found out how to remove it as a repository source.

It should not be set as default, or perhaps, if it isn't there, Synaptic should go and look on the internet. Which it doesn't.
