Description
Most Internet users in Russia and specifically over 80% of internet users in Moscow and St.Petersburg connect to the Internet via PPTP VPN connection (for example, users of largest Moscow providers Corbina Telecom and NetByNet Holding). Since the package network-manager-pptp, which allows PPTP connection configuration, is not included in the default installation, they need to connect the Internet under Windows or other operating system, download the package, resolve the dependencies manually and install it under Linux. This makes it vertually impossible for an average Internet user to switch to Linux after using Windows on home PC, and that's why the ISPs do not provide support for Linux.
There are some fork Ubuntu-based Russian distributions such as Runtu (www.runtu.org) that include the package by default, but I think it would be better it it was included in the mainstream Ubuntu release.

Agree.
Insert a network-manager-pptp in default, it's a good idea.
You can use scripts, but network-manager-pptp convenient ...
PS. Sorry for bad English, using a translator program (below the text in Russian).
================
Согласен.
Включить network-manager-pptp в установки по умолчанию, это хорошая идея.
Можно использовать скрипты, но network-manager-pptp удобнее...
PS. Простите за плохой английский, использую программу переводчик (ниже текст на русском языке).

>>Why aren't you using an pptp Internet gateway?
because it costs $50 - ..
I do use router because I need to share the Internet connection on my 2 laptops, communicator and my neighbours PC. But in my case this router costs about $150 (because my provider uses MS CHAP v2 and MPPE 128 bit encryption, and not every device supports it and which does it is expensive)
Most of russian Internet users have only desktop at home so they don't need to spend extra money, but they can't use the Internet as Nxx wrote.
my vote is to include this package to default distributive!

Agree!
network-manager-pptp is "must-have", because many ISP's connecting their users to the internet via pptp-vpn.
Windows and MacOSX can conect to Intenet via pptp-vpn, out of the box, why Ubuntu can't?

I totally agree!
I don't understand why such internet-related things doesn't work out of the box. In Russia we have great number of people accessing internet thru PPTP VPN-connection. And what do we get after installing Ubuntu? mm.. I suppose it's like in any other operating system - nothing.
PC without internet-access is like a gsm-cellular without sim-card.
Come on, include it=)

Without PPTP support lots of people in Russia will be unable to use Ubuntu at all since their internet connection requires PPTP to work. ISPs in Russia prefer to use PPTP for some reasons to authenticate users in Ethernet networks. That's strange but it is here. So, whole Metropolitan Area Networks with hundreds of thousands of users can't use Ubuntu due to this stupid issue.
