Idea #9878: Gnome: Create something similar to KDEs FolderView for the desktop

Written by blablum the 14 Jun 08 at 17:31. Category: Others. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Rationale
Kde's FolderView allows you to have files from different folders shown in your desktop, even allowing filtering. It seems rather usefull. Gnome should have something similar.

(I know it is a gnome suggestion, but I think it's good to post it here)

Solution #1: Auto-generated solution of idea #9878
Written by blablum the 14 Jun 08 at 17:31.
Ubuntu Brainstorm was updated in January 2009. Since the idea #9878 was submitted before this update, its rationale and solution are not separated. Please vote accordingly, and if you have the necessary rights, please separate the rationale from the solution. Thanks!

Solution #2: Use plasma in gnome
Written by Loffe the 17 Jan 09 at 16:25.
It is possible to use plasma from KDE in gnome. You only have to run "plasma". Remove the the kde panel, and you are ready to add folder view to your shiny plasma desktop

Solution #4: implement in Gnome-Do
Written by Shady3D the 1 Jul 09 at 13:56.
probably every one will hate this solution, as Gnome-Do is a C# application, but i just feel its good if this feature is in Gnome-Do

It already exists - ability to view folders, even in remote location, on your desktop. Ubuntu Tweak provides a setting that can do that (I don't know how to set it otherwise).

if you want to use all the features of KDE, why don't you just use KDE? What is the point of backporting KDE features into GNOME? I mean I can see the reason, but seriously, the apps only depend on themselves and QT, so are you really that stubbon that you want to have people port KDE features to GNOME because your too stubborn to install QT libs and KDE libs?

To mp3phish:
What are you talking about? Because I like one feature of KDE then I have to used it despite all other features I like in gnome? So what you're saying is you like everything on gnome and nothing from kde? It doesn't make sense. Good things can be copied. I think gnome has the most advantages to my taste and that is why I use it, but whenever a kde application is better I use it in a gnome-session.

The problem about trying to use plasma on gnome (it can be done) is that you have to install a lot of kde libraries and plasma is still very unstable, so I much rather have gnome's nautilus desktop, but with a little more power. The widget idea is not bad.
