Description
This is not my idea.
You can get a lot of tutorials explaining how to do it.
But they are very scary for a newbie.
It would be really nice if there were a GUI tool for linux and windows(of course! ;D) to which i could point the .iso file, and it would ask me to boot from the disk on next reboot.
Or better than that, it should have an option to copy all the settings from my current installation and automatically set it up in the new installation.
A new version of Ubuntu is released every 6 months.
Unlike windows Ubuntu is so stable that i never had to reinstall it.No doubt getting an new Ubuntu CD is damn easy. But Since i am in the habit of upgrading to every new version, i have dozens of CDs lying at the bottom of my drawer. What a waste!
I have made my own customized 'Hacked Heron' which fits only on a dvd. I am unable to install it on my friend's computer who does not have a dvd drive and another whose dvd drive is broken.

Do you have any suggestion on how would this be possible to be done? You would probably have to update windows' partition boot to install something that boots the iso image or something intrusive like that. How does wubi work?
i have dozens of CDs lying at the bottom of my drawer. What a waste! Mankind has invented rewritable CDs some time ago...

I think you will get a hint about your questions from the attached forum thread. I had some very bad experiences with rewritable CDs. So i don't rely on them any more for as important work as upgrading my system.

An easy way to install from USB stick would be enough.
And if it just were setting up a working system with internet.

Try Wubi http://wubi-installer.org/ pretty much solved (but you can't run it as a live CD), but yeah the Ubuntu team should make something that you install and can choose to run when you are going to boot your computer. If it is a success you can say "adios" to the CD's!

It would be nice to be able to use a USB drive to boot and then install from a network iso or a remote iso on a server. I have seen this functionality with fedora and a few other distros. Some of my pc's have the latest iso on them but half the time I am out of cd's leaving me with no way to install ubuntu.

This idea blows. No offense.
It is unclear how it is going to be done, or any detailed information on it.
A USB installation is a different story and already exists.

I am no techie...don't expect me to write all the detailed information on how it is going to be done. I had an idea and i shared it expecting the techies to come out with some detail blueprint how to implement it best !

The summary is a great idea. The description leaves a lot to be desired - it attempts to describe how to do something via a manner that has at least one elephantine issue. As a general rule, if you're a non-techie, describe the what of your idea, and leave off with the how. (Actually, even us techies need to do that, if we're giving an idea in an area that isn't our forte.)
I would love it if the Ubuntu devs facilitated making USB boot disks, both of the install and the netboot varieties. It would be lovely if the netboot USB disk could fit on my old 32MB USB stick (I currently use this to keep a copy of my XO developer key, as it's about the only thing I have that I want on a USB disk that's small enough to fit on a 32M disk. Sigh.)
It would also be nice to have a non-CD method for non-USB systems; however, the majority of new systems these days are USB-bootable.
Note: the idea was not as horrible as some people may think. There is a program to do most of what he wanted - unfortunately, one of the Windows updates broke it; I cannot remember which one. (It actually loaded a kernel and an initial memory disk image. Now, that initial memory disk image could include code to load a CD image from somewhere on the harddrive, and I recall there was a distro that depended on that for their main install.)
