Idea #9638: Overhaul Synaptic Package Manager GUI.

Written by deadowl the 8 Jun 08 at 00:28. Category: System. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Rationale
The location of the apply button isn't consistent with the Add/Remove GUI. This might not be a big deal, but there are people I've installed Ubuntu for that have asked me when I tell them to use it after getting used to the Add/Remove thing.

I don't know of anyone who uses the filters/sections. They're not particularly organized as well as they could be. In fact, generally people already know what they want to install and just search for it. However, there is no search bar built in, it's just a button. They should be using the sections as it makes things easier, but people don't because it doesn't appear in the slightest bit useful (hence why demand is so high for a built-in search bar). Perhaps a use of icons there would make it look useful, though I'm not particularly sure if that can be supported without screwing up adept, esp. if sections are defined on the server and there's no way to extend inputs.

In any case, Synaptic needs a GUI overhaul.
