In a way its a little disrespectful towards all the developers who put in a lot of effort for free. Also, you may end up in a situation where you donated money to one team while in fact the best solution was produced by another team.

I think some form of escrow model is the only way forward. You define the problem and when someone show up with the working solution, they are awarded the money. This way you don't favor any one vendor (developer).

The exception is "grant"-style donations, where developers need money for a specific purpose, such a particular piece of hardware. In any event, I don't think Brainstorm is the right place to handle such donations. Maybe this could be a really small fee, like "click here to donate 1$ to this project", instead of "click here to donate money to this project".

So people will think "mmh, 1$ is small, let's contribute!" and not "mmh, how much should i give ? 1$ ? 10$ ? 100$ ? Well... i'll think about it later"
