Idea #9626: Launchpad should provide a way for people to donate money to software projects

Written by lamalex the 7 Jun 08 at 15:33. Category: Others. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Rationale
Launchpad is one of the best tools for managing your free software project, it becomes the hub for many free software projects acting as a website, code repository, hosting mailing lists, the works. On top of all of this, Launchpad should provide an easy way for people to donate money to projects they enjoy. Say I really like GNOME Do, or Miro, and I want to support them with a financial contribution so they keep doing their awesome work, launchpad should have a donate button that allows me to securely donate money via credit card, paypal, or some other secure and easy method.

You can donate money to some projects on SourceForge.net

I hear OpenSSH wants some funding.

Good choices for funding are software which works on many operating systems and benefit many people.

Example, improvements to Xorg will be good for both GNOME and KDE users, and both Linux and BSD users.

If we want things to get done, we must find a way to motivate "freelance" developers who might be in financial constraint.

I don't want to sound like a bitch, but personally I think its a bad idea to give people money up front.

In a way its a little disrespectful towards all the developers who put in a lot of effort for free. Also, you may end up in a situation where you donated money to one team while in fact the best solution was produced by another team.

I think some form of escrow model is the only way forward. You define the problem and when someone show up with the working solution, they are awarded the money. This way you don't favor any one vendor (developer).

The exception is "grant"-style donations, where developers need money for a specific purpose, such a particular piece of hardware. In any event, I don't think Brainstorm is the right place to handle such donations. There use to be something called the Linux Foundation or something ...

... The Linux Fund (http://www.linuxfund.org/), I meant.

+1. Many times I liked a particular program and would like to thank the people that did it.

Good idea.

Maybe this could be a really small fee, like "click here to donate 1$ to this project", instead of "click here to donate money to this project".

So people will think "mmh, 1$ is small, let's contribute!" and not "mmh, how much should i give ? 1$ ? 10$ ? 100$ ? Well... i'll think about it later"

No, atm, we're just wanting to even have the option in launch[pad for that. Decide the amounts after...

I have a spec on Launchpad that is almost identical to your idea so I took the liberty of adding it as an attachment, hope you don't mind.

Feel free to add comments, etc to the blueprint.

Thanks
