Idea #9496: Get Rid of Apt and Make Default Aptitude

Description
There is an important feature that Aptitude that Adept Manager, Apt-get, and Synaptic Manager does not have.

Let's say you install a package, and it brings in 10 more packages.

Later you want to uninstall that package but when you go to uninstall that package, it doesn't install all the other 10 packages.

If you use:
sudo aptitude install
Then it will record all its dependencies.

Uninstall it using Aptitude, and it will remove those extra packages, UNLESS it is in use by another app.

This is great for trying to save memory space and making your computer faster.

So next time you go to look at packages needed to be installed in Synaptic, memorize the package name and use Aptitude.

You could just uninstall the extra packages yourself.

Your computer won't magically become faster by uninstalling packages, btw.

Dude, have you tried memorizing 10 package names that are like libsqlxt3-1? I don't think so.

I just want to get stuff done and I don't have time to write the names down.

I believe that's exactly why apt-get auto-remove exists. IF you don't want apt-get, just make it be a symlink to aptitude.
I'm frikking tired of people suggesting personal preferences ideas to be implemented as defaults.

I'm sorry, isn't your liking to apt-get a personal preference?

personal preferences or not. what is the better way? apt and mess up some dependencies or aptitude and keep things clean and working.

I mean what is the way to go for Ubuntu's future?

+0 for now

@Exsecrabilus: No it's not. Aptitude it's a front-end for apt-get. Apt-get IS the package manager.

Besides, i don't understand this idea. Aptitude is already included by default, you just need to use it and that's it, you don't even need to configure it. So what would change from implementing your idea?.

Now, if you would have suggested "add tracking for dependencies on Synaptic", that would make more sense.

Different people are different.

I personally don't like synaptic because it's a bloated, huge GUI. But that does not mean that I feel we should get rid of synaptic; many other people like it.

I'd say there's about half a dozen reasons to prefer aptitude over synaptic, and probably the synaptic fans would claim the opposite.

Don't get rid of apt-get. Just make sure synaptic uses aptitude so that unnecessary dependencies are removed.
