This isn't an idea. It doesn't discuss how to make this possible..

PS, we have the infrastructure in place.
==> Opengl,
==> PulseAudio/OpenAL
==> GCC (with C & C++ STL support)
==> Game Engines (ID games, Torque, many others)
==> GPU processing technologies: Nvidia CUDA
All the technologies are well supported on OSX, Windows and Linux. Our problem is that unlike Microsoft, we don't treat them as one unit, and we don't promote them enough. If users used ALL these technologies, their code would be pretty portable.
What you need is a marketting idea, and a way to encourage developers to use these over DirectX. And provide great documentation for it all.

What are you talking about?
A new distribution?
Improvements to OpenGL?
Better graphics device drivers?
More games ported?

It appears they are porting Steam to linux. This should make it easier for companies to market games on linux.
They finally get:
1) access to the user-base (they can't use stores .. the market size is too small)
2) some real data on the amount of people willing to pay for linux games, if they know it will be well supported (which is usually isn't now). Steam is all about making sure the games keep working with OS updates.
3) backing from a large reliable vendor (Valve in this case)
I think it will really make a difference.
I've never bought any of the linux games; since their support never lasts .. a new ubuntu release and they often just stop working. Even the demo's. They don't package properly, etc. But I would buy it from Steam. Support-wise they have a rock-solid reputation.

They (Gabe Newell and those at Valve) said they would NEVER port to linux. They were at Microsoft in the 1990's and actually created the first directx's before they quit to make valve. They will not change to opengl, and mike (on the forums, works for valve) said there just aren't enough people to sell to.
Our best hope is wine at http://www.winehq.org/ They have good(ish) dx9 support and Steam is a Platinum supported game: http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=1554&iTestingId=26 104
Half Life 2 and other sources games run well if you have a nvidia card (ie not crappy ati drivers - damn you fglrx!), albeit with a few minor bugs and having to turn off compiz.

What keeps Linux from being a good game platform:
* small userbase (little return of investment)
* the need to compile and test for several distros
* Gamers usually run Windows, because their previous games only ran on that
* weak graphics drivers (because of small userbase)

Gabe said they would never port to linux but from what I heard, they communicate with the WINE group in order to make sure their games can run through WINE.

Thanks for your participation.
The description of this idea does not suggest anything, it just stands for "games under ubuntu". I believe that all of us would be happy for that, however this idea does not suggest any ways to reach that goal, therefore we can say that it's not a idea. You can vote on it but don't forget that it won't give results.
I invite you instead to think about ways to help fixing this problem. I know that gaming is somewhat tricky because it's not ubuntu's fault, and ubuntu almost can do nothing about it, but don't close your mind to potential ideas you might have ;-)
And ASK your favorite game to support Linux! ;-)
