A better way would be to include support for them in networkmanager, but I suppose nm 0.7 is capable of that...

I got the huawei to work with kubuntu with very few effort, just using kppp (but it has issues as well, kppp doesn't like NetworkManager...)
You just have to fill in your providers data and it works...
