Description
The Desktop is usually used as temporary workspace, with anything else being clutter and distraction.
Most of the time, the desktop is covered by active application windows, so anything that resides on the desktop is hard to reach.
Also - this is duplication of functionality - the places menu provides an easy access to drives, which is not obscured by the windows.

If you don't like icons on your desktop, just don't put anything there. Stop requesting setting up defaults that suit only personal preferences.

It's a user-interface refinement suggestion, rather than personal preference.

I think that's just a question of personal flavour, and new users might find it uncomfortable if they found nothing on the desktop. But indeed there should be a simple program which allows user to switch between the two modes, instead of go into the gconf editor which would be hard for new users.

Sorry my browser just hanged, and I pressed the button twice.

There's already a way to turn off Desktop Icons.
1, If you don't have it already, get Configuration Editor from the repos (synaptic).
2. It will appear in Applications/System Tools. Launch it.
3. Browse the tree to apps/nautilus/desktop
4. Set your Desktop ANY way you like!!!

OH an BTW since Firefox downloads automagiclly to the desktop, I like to turn on the "Home" icon to have a quick place to drag downloads for later sorting after I have reviewed them.
A better idea is to have the drive icons "aware" of each other to prevent stacking them on top of one another. That's an issue that drives me bonkers. For some reason (totally at random) my drives occasionally will appear on top of one another when plugging and unplugging removable drives.
