Idea #9370: Replace xsane with a great gnome-scan in default Ubuntu install

Written by zaryk the 2 Jun 08 at 07:51. Category: Office. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Rationale
Xsane is ugly and not user-friendly. It should be replaced with better, well-supported gnome-scan application.

I'm not sure about this one. Xsane may be ugly, but it has a lot of very useful features. Does gnome-scan have the same functionality?

Looking at the screen shots Gnome-scan seem simpler and easier to understand with many of the common features a normal person would use.

I think its a good idea (based on the screen shot). Seems better for everyday users. If someone requires tighter control they can install Xsane.

Raval, that's exactly what I was going to say. I prefer Xsane but for the average user gnome-scan is certainly easier.

gnome scan is still in alpha stage. Ubuntu will use it, when its stable and good enough.

I was just about to post exactly what natureflow has said.

Alpha you say? Just right for Interpid post-lts release! (8

I just think there is no need to include a scan application in the default ubuntu installation... What percentage of people have scanner nowadays?? I mean... Since there is digital cameras and most of paperwork is done directly through internet?

No need for it... But in case there is... Yeah: Xsane is ugly as hell :D

ubunteando, I think you are right, there is no need for scanner aplication. Maybe, to make things easy for new users, if a scanner is recognized, ask whether gnome-scan should be installed.
