Idea #9344: Nautilus should show text-based location bar by default

Written by george9233 the 1 Jun 08 at 16:05. Category: Accessibility. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Rationale
Before I figured out the button with a paper and a pen on it located on the left of all the location buttons is used for switching between button and text-based location bars, I thought there was no way of typing the location by hand in Nautilus.

I think Nautilus should either show the text-based location bar by default or by replacing the current button with a one that can better describe its job by the illustration on it.

No. It's much quicker to use the buttons to move up several directories at once, and is more user friendly.

Maybe a more descriptive button would be good, but overall it's a -1.

Yes! Functionality should not be hidden from the user. Gnome is supposed to be very usable, but this is a failure. The button bar and location field should be combined into the same thing, like in Windows Vista.
