Idea #9308: Ship a splash screen for grub by default

Written by MighMoS the 31 May 08 at 19:13. Category: Look and Feel. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Rationale
With all the artists Ubuntu has, and Grub not going anywhere soon, could grub at least get a splash screen by default? It's much more appealing than the simple menu that exists now.

Boot loader should be minimalistic.
It should be do one thing, and do it well.

It should not be seen or heard, just immediately and silently pass control of the system to the kernel.

It shouldn't have no bells and whistles. Shouldn't have no splash screens, icons, graphics, audio, etc.

A bootloader is good when you're not aware of it.

MighMos, we should be focusing on grub2. Grub2 looks like it may even support video's (at least the name of some of their libs suggest it )

Well, I won't be satisfied until I can use my DVB tuner card on my GRUB boot screen before I boot up. :)

But seriously, it wouldn't hurt to throw in a nice boot pic - it's just a pic. Fedora's GRUB pic looks nice, and it takes up bugger-all space. Eye-candy, static or otherwise, sells!

Agree with Eldmannen

@Eldmannen: The ability to do so is already written in GRUB(1). Its a single line in the config file that takes a .xpm file.

@Auzy: I'm not talking about adding support for true-color 32-bit ARGB visuals, just adding a default 256 color pixmap, just like GRUB supports right now.
