This should easily be integrated with a tool to move/copy an entire ubuntu install to a new drive, which has been requested elsewhere on brainstorm. I would think the mechanisms are pretty similar in the two tasks - the only difference is in the types of filesystems that have to be dealt with. However, both cases require creation of a new partition, reconfiguration of boot loaders, and migration of files within the filesystem.

If this can be accomplished without things getting "wonky" then great!

This would be a great idea. I run wobi or show people ubuntu using wobi and they love it. It would be awesome to move to native!

I think that running the migration tool from the LiveCD (instead of the wubi-tized Ubuntu) is mandatory. This would help prevent wubi from becoming a Windows-to-Linux vehicle for malware.

hi!
i don't think that this is so important because:
1: if you have installed with wubi you have a full os like if you would have installed natively
2: if someone instead of the reasons mentioned above still want to install natively ubuntu, no problem, live cd, and in 25 minutes he/she will have natively in a separate partition
3: there are much more important thighs with wich the developers should be occupied like: the sounds problems in ubuntu, video problems in ubuntu, flash problems in ubuntu etc...
these are more common, general problems at the users, for what there are no solution, and i think this basic problems are much more important for usability, that to solve wubi installation to native instalation!

no, this is totally wrong decision!
the development guys spending their effort for tottaly stupid, unnecessary things.
instead of this they should concetrate for the some very important weeknes improvement, like mentioned above!

LVPM only works halfways. It will copy the installation to its own partition, BUT:
- it does not update the windows bootloader.
- it updates the "wubified" bootloader
So basically, you have to go through 3 boots to get to your new installation: The windows boot, the wubi boot and finally the new installation boot. This also means that you CANNOT remove the wubi installation, which was an objective to begin with.
So improving LVPM would solve this issue.

This tool is mandatory. I had a Wubi install once. I broke Ubuntu once, and recovered from it within a day. But my Windows was never the same. :(

What really needs to be addressed is to be able to update a Wubi installation without wiping out the Windows MBR and boot record. I have experienced this with the Update Manager (when it informs you the next release is available). It does not handle a Wubi install - it assumes Ubuntu owns the HD and does not know about Windows.
Yes, I know you can partition the HD and install Ubuntu in its own partition, but some of us choose not to do such for various reasons. Also, I have not noticed any significant performance degradation using virtual disks. In fact, my internet performance is faster under Ubuntu (Wubi install) than under XP. However, I use applications like MagicJack, which only runs under Windows (maybe MACs?) and a few others. Using the DOS Emulator and WINE are out of the question. Some of those apps would require you to install the XP (or wother WIN OSes) entirely.

There are already a solution for that! The tool remastersys can easily save your ubuntu even on wubi installations on a live DVD. You can install this DVD and have all your stuff on a real partition back. For more information visit:
http://www.geekconnection.org/remastersys/remastersystool.html
The only pity is that ubuntu don't distribute it self...

Fine idea.... I agree because many computers do come with a somewhat inept OS (read MS) - and it would be nice to make a real install of Ubuntu via the wubi interface.

I just recently migrated from wubi. I believe it would be beneficial for this kind of option, but, it would be easier just to be able to backup Ubuntu, and recover from that backup either on to a new wubi installation or a full installation perhaps even between 32 and 64 bit. That way one could migrate either way. And it is beneficial to make the switch btw, it runs a bit faster and it help to maintain your hd's space.

Support this idea! There should be a seeminlgy upgrade possibility from a Wubi install to a native install!
