Idea #9215: Use Gnome/KDE Panel as "Window-Line" like Mac OSX

bug This idea is a duplicate of Idea #3136: Mac-style Menu Bar.
Written by this.is.basti the 29 May 08 at 08:10. Category: Look and Feel. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Rationale
Well, I do not know, whats the real name of "Window-Line", but I mean the Menus "File", "Edit", "View", "Help" and so on, which u can see in every window/programm u use.

So, there is a nice feature found in Mac OSX. The Start-Panel (on the top) is also used as this "Window-Line".

E.g. If u open Firefox, than u should find your Gnome-Icon on the left and right to them, u have to find "File", "Edit", "View" ...
If you change your Programm (maybe) to Gimp you will find right to your Gnome Symbol in your Panel on the top of your screen the Menus "File", "Xtns", "Help".

So, is is clear, what I mean? I Hope so.

This would be a pretty nice development.

Regards

KDE 3 does support this feature, however KDE4 does not.
But it probably will once it reaches 4.1 ...
Don't know (and don't care) about gnome...
0 from, me for now, I will vote, if KDE 4.1 will not have this feature, even though i personally am not using it.

As has been said before, KDE 3 supports this. There's also GNUStep in the repositories which is an alternative to Gnome and KDE with its own programs (although you can still run all other programs inside it, albeit without the global menu feature).

If you want to try it then install the "gnustep" package and on the login screen choose Options>Session and choose GNUStep (you can switch back to Gnome the same way)

I hope this feature gets back in KDE4.1
