Description
As a friend of mine pointed out, in Mac OSX you can hit Alt+ and get a special character. Alt+Shift+ gets another special character.
Something like this would be awesome.

It does exist. You have to define a compose key in the keyboard preferences.

Ubuntu already does this when you hold down the 'Alt Gr' key.

I can't find a compose key in the keyboard preferences, and I don't even have an Alt Gr key. (That may be unique to Macbook keyboards though).

In hardy, you select the "Layouts" tab and click on the "layout options" button.
