Description
A lot of the 24817 currently listed apps in my synaptic I'm not interested in. It is very likely we are all searching for the same set of extra apps.

Let's have a "most popular" list of let's say 200 apps, where you can easily browse through. This will help the novice user as well as the experienced user to install their fav. apps.

This list can be compiled on a monthly basis, based on the number of full downloads on ubuntu servers for example (only when a method can be found where users are not able to cheat).

Have you checked Add/Remove under Applications menu? It's a stripped down Synaptic that has the most common packages ranked by popularity. I think it's exactly what you are looking for, and it's been available since I can remember.
