Idea #8882: Make youtube use totem plug-in not flash

Written by gQuigs the 21 May 08 at 05:07. Category: Internet & Networking. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Rationale
We can play youtube videos in Totem now and they work great, as we are using youtube's api.
Flash still has some issues on Linux and Firefox that don't seem like they are going to improve drastically (like sound).
Apple's iPhone doesn't have flash on it and instead uses the youtube api to view videos.

Let's use it too.

*Note: I am not saying we shouldn't try to improve Flash support, just that youtube will also become better if Totem does the playing, (better acceleration, better fullscreen).

+1 but consider that youtube videos have other feature which totem can't emulate.

If this is done, can they at least fix the color problems in totem with youtube movies. They look awful!

Adobe released a beta of Adobe Flash 10, hopefully it is better.

Adobe released specifications for the Flash file format. Hopefully the free flash implementations like Gnash and SWFdec now catches up.

Hopefully 8.10 Intrepid Ibex comes with tighter Pulse audio integration.

"Adobe released specifications for the Flash file format. Hopefully the free flash implementations like Gnash and SWFdec now catches up."

Unfortunately both projects were pretty unimpressed with the specification release and all that they've release now were already pretty much worked out. They called it more of a PR move than any real use to the Open Source implementations.

this is a job for your own greasemonkey script, not for anything that should ship with ubuntu - which should, by default, open websites as they are meant to be opened (within reason.)

avoid flash 10 when there is a GPL alternative
