Idea #8824: Make the alternate installer the anything-you-want installer

Written by steve196 the 19 May 08 at 16:09. Category: Installation. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Rationale
The LiveCD installer is already the simple one. So the alternate one could be the really customizable one.

* Do you want to install to one or several partitions, an lvm-system, a file (like wubi), an usb-stick ...?
* Whatever your choice was, do you want to encrypt the root filesystem?
* Do you want a swap partition, a swap file or no swap?
* Do you want to encrypt swap?
* Do you want grub on mbr, grub on the root partition, a chainload through ntloader, add entries to already existing grub, lilo, no bootloader...?
* Do you want to configure by hand, which applications handle your network functionality?
* Do you want to use the standard kernel or download one that is compiled for some specific kind of cpu (of course these must be uploaded first)
* Do you want your monitor to be autodetected at every boot, or do you want to enter its properties now, or do you want it autodetected only now?
* Are there commands you want to run at every startup?
* Do you want to customize the look, resolution etc. of the splash and login screen?
...

With several of the questions on one page and all of them having a useful default answer it should be very quick to get through.

Not by default, of course, but in expert mode. Some of this is already there, but there are some great things here we could add (and send upsteam too.)
I love the one about configuring the monitor. I routinely turn on my computer with my monitor off so it will be ready by the time I come back.

This would be useful in an expert mode setting. If it were deafault setting it would confuse many users that were not able to use the graphical installer. I, for example, cannot use the graphical installer on my Dell Inspiron 1520 for some unknown reason (I haven't really looked it up) and if I saw all that the first time I installed I would have been utterly confused and given up.

Could be very useful +1

This might be useful, but IMHO resources could be better used elsewhere.
I would propose for a derived distribution to specialize in customization. Actually I think Debian is trying to do that?

I think this is a wonderful idea. I'd be happy just being able to customize the applications installed by default on the alternate install. As someone else said, it doesn't have to be a top-tier option, just another menu at boot for "Expert Install" or something like that.

@Breakable - I disagree that this would be a waste of resources. This is the "alternate" disc we're talking about, after all. Why not offer alternatives?

+100 :)
I remeber OS/2 control interfaces where always was "Tailored" button for advanced and flexible options. That will make install easy for beginners and flexible for skilled users.

For instance, Fedora allows user to select set of packages he wants. Something structured like office, kde devel, java devel, kernel devel, etc.

Beginner wil not push button and will get default set of apps. Skilled user will be able "tailor" system at install time.
