Idea #8698: Clean up "administraton", "system tools" and "settings" menus in gnome menu.

Written by pepperpupper the 17 May 08 at 01:19. Category: Look and Feel. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Rationale
Some times I think it can be somewhat confusing to find the settings manager I want in the default menus in gnome. I think the above mentioned menus could be cleaned up by either merging them into one large menu option or creating some sort of "control-panel" applet that lets the user bowse through the settings. We don't want to confuse the user... even newbies should be able to use ubuntu succesfully!

What about this:

$ gnome-control-center

Sound to me like you'd like to add one more layer of complexity...

I'd go with Jorsol and recommend that Ubuntu get rid of the "Preferences" and "Administration" menus and provide a link to gnome-control-center. It would group settings icons by type, make them searchable - and most importantly, put them all in one place where they should be.

Glotz: This would not be another layer of complexity. It would simplify the interface and make options more accessible, using a tool already installed by default.

Yeah, using the gnome control center would be great. It wouldn't be to hard to implement either :)

The gnome-control-panel is already accessable its just not enabled in the menu by default.
Under prefrences>Main Menu
Look under preferences and click the check box on "control center" if thats all you want to see then uncheck everything else and thats all you will get.

I always turn off the items that I dont use in the menues.
