Description
Hi All,

My suggestion is that we develop a simple version of ubuntu for easy use by Kids. Nothing complicated just easy graphics and cool and simple applications. Something a 5year old would use.

Many Thanks

Not-another-Ubuntu...

We already have Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Edubuntu, lets not make 1000.

Uh did someone say Edubuntu? Ubuntu for kids? Already implemented.

Yes there's Edubuntu but other than having some educational software on it, it really isn't just regular old Ubuntu.

It needs to use simpler words, or pictures in more cases particularly for "young" users. Also younger kids respond better to primary colors, I think.

Think OLPC in terms of a GUI "for" kids.

I voted +1, but really don't think it needs another distro. I have created log-in accounts for kids on Ubuntu with ages from 6 to 10. It takes a half-hour to dumb-it down (too uninformed to write a script) so I really wish I had a simple button to click to make a "Kids" account.

@ HDave

why dont you submit a HowTo so that a Dev can add the differences to the account creator? prevents making another distro, but gives kids a UI they can understand.

win-win, if you ask me.

On my daughters school, another dad and I together organise the school's informatic classes and lessons.

I am just now - in this very moment - in the school's computer room and work on the PCs (we got eight brand new ones yesterday)

everything here runs on edubuntu (which has a VERY cool look and feel) and kids from 3 to 11 years of age have access to the PCs - I don't see the point. Kids learn how to use and what to click very fast. They get along with ubuntu quite well.

I think it's better to do another "desktop environment".

I think Edubuntu is already a GREAT distro for kids. I have both my 6 year old and my 8 year old using it on their computers. They love all the games and educational software, and we use the Glubble Firefox plugin to keep them safe online. Edubuntu is great because it is able to grow with the kids, software for the younger kids and software for the older kids. Maybe having some different themes for different age groups would be better than a new distro for younger kids.
