Idea #8672: Let's focus on the interface and design

bug This idea was marked as implemented the 20 August 12.
Written by makiute the 16 May 08 at 14:55. Category: Look and Feel. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: Implemented
Rationale
Ubuntu must have the best interface ever created. Let's make this our goal. An interesting interface define a good OS.

Stimulate mockups in the Ubuntu brainstorm

Hire some good designers

Innovate the Gnome's interface by creating new tools

There must be a reason to choose Ubuntu instead os windows and OSX. I live in Brazil, and i must say that Windows, for us, coast nothing because os the piracy. Beeing free is no reason to swith OS.

Availability os software is also a disvantage os linux.

So, we can only beat them in the creativity of our interface.

Sorry about the english.

Selected solution (#1): Auto-generated solution of idea #8672
Written by makiute the 16 May 08 at 14:55.
Ubuntu Brainstorm was updated in January 2009. Since the idea #8672 was submitted before this update, its rationale and solution are not separated. Please vote accordingly, and if you have the necessary rights, please separate the rationale from the solution. Thanks!

Just a comment on the "being free is noe reason to switch OS"; how about being legal? :P

Blueface wrote on the 16 May 08 at 15:19
I think I read somewhere that in Brazil, piracy is legal.

Rabbid wrote on the 16 May 08 at 15:24
What? Why don't all torrent trackers just set up their servers there then? :P

The biggest goal is hardware compatibility, the second biggest goal is then design.

That's not really an idea.

Redrazor39 wrote on the 17 May 08 at 00:54
YES!

I've been posting the hell out of this on ubuntuforums, here, and anywhere else related to Ubuntu! OMG YES! FINALLY! SOMEONE WHO UNDERSTANDS!!!

THANK YOU!

frandavid, it is TOTALLY an idea. It's an idea of where to set the focus more.

Maybe you should think a little more before posting ;)

I don't think something totally innovative on the Linux desktop is practical for the current desktop environments. We need a new Desktop. Something that has innovation, and an innovative community, from the very beginning (innovation in terms of usability). Gnome, KDE, and Xfce have gone on too long to be changed from their use of the traditional ideas of the desktop metaphor.

In a googletechtalk, Mark Shuttleworth stated:

"free software is always striving to reach parity with its proprietary alternative. Once a free software title reach parity, innovation sky-rockets, people start looking over the parapet, and from there, it's blue skies from then on."

That's not the exact statement word for word, but that's the jist of it. Linux has proven itself to be able to run incredible GUIs, we can compete with the proprietary big boys right now!

The UI seems fine to me.. And what do you mean by "hire good designers"?
Just take a look at www.gnome-look.org

Good idea Makiute, I wanted to post it by myself ^^
The first thing people are looking at when they want to buy something, is the design :

- Vista is all crappy but looks "great" (I do not agree with them though... vista is crappy, that's all, even in it's design)

- Mac isn't bad at all, but keep having the same interface for ages now. Xp is totally lagged behind.

- Sun os is reaaaally awful.

- And linux ? Well who can tell linux is beautiful ? It's not bad... yes not bad but what else ?
I'm very disappointed by kde4 look. I hope it will be better in a few months, but the taskbar is ugly. Same for the menu, but I'm waiting Raptor with impatience ! At least an original idea, straigt from "the blue skies" (I dont know if you understand what I mean...)
Gnome is decent. Far better than Xp or Vista for me, but still not enough.

Aren't you waiting from linux that it shows to everybody the exemple ? Free, design, wonderful, accessible...
For the moment, linux still has a long way to cover in design...

But I keep saying that linux interface and design is for the moment better than everything ever made !

I voted yes, but I wouldn't say that the interface is bad. I'd just say that it's not attractive enough to make people who might be open to the idea of linux, but the fact that it isn't very good might just make them say, "I want an OS that looks good.".

I also have a small argument for those who might say that interface is not important, it's very easily themed. Many people don't realize this. I can tell you that I've had to forcefully make people change their themes to get them to agree to use Ubuntu. Even though I say, "you can change the theme to whatever you want", they just say, "I'm happy with how Windows is, thanks." So I go and change it, after which they are OK with using Ubuntu.

So, I think that we can eat up a huge market share if we just spend a fraction more on making a better interface, or using already available themes as default, apart from developing it directly.

It's worth a small compromise on the pace at which everything else goes for a small period of time. Anyways, how much resources can you actually divert to a better interface that will slow other things down? I don't think that should be too much. A little more importance to interface, not a whole re-do is what I'm asking for, just a tiny little bit more. Because for every small improvement in interface, there will be a large increase in the number of people that will use Ubuntu.

People with high positions in Microsoft said the same thing:

"Let's make Vista more visually appealing. A nice-looking desktop is a money-making desktop."

Well guess what? It didn't work for Microsoft.

Rabbid wrote on the 23 May 08 at 21:59
Exsecrabilus: That was because their interface sucked, and putting a sucky UI on a sucky OS doesn't make it suck less.

However, putting a nice UI on a nice OS makes it even nicer!

Find more inspiration from OS X. Forget chasing Vista.

Umang wrote on the 30 May 08 at 15:49
Be original! Don't copy OS X or Vista, or any other thing!

The world of art is not split in to two parts. There can be a third and a fourth. Artists are innovative, leave it to them if you are asking any!

Closing this idea as "implemented" since Ubuntu has gone through a MASSIVE user interface redesign and this idea lack any kind of goal or target.
