Idea #8630: Force compatible filenames/paths on NTFS partitions

Related to: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Description
Currently, the only characters that Ubuntu does not support in filenames and paths are slashes, while Windows has a considerable list (apostrophes, asterisks, etc.).

Creating a file on a NTFS drive in Ubuntu and naming it with one of these characters causes Windows to be unable to read the file and anything beneath it in the directory structure. This is extremely dangerous.

Ubuntu should automatically strip these characters (or prompt for them to be renamed) when creating/moving/renaming files on NTFS drives in order to prevent crashes, and allow user's to access their files from Windows.

NTFS supports apostrophes, asterisks, etc in the filenames.
Just Windows does not.

While most people who use NTFS does use Windows, someone could actually use NTFS for his partitions without having Windows installed on his computers.

What exactly is "extremely dangerous" ?

Most of these characters inside filenames are a nuisance, even if you don't have ntfs or windows anywhere (especially *,\,ยด).
That said, behaviour of linux on windows filesystems should keep compatibility with windows. +1

Extremely dangerous is accidentally renaming important files or folders on your Windows partition and then not being able to boot. Extremely dangerous is also naming a key business document and then not being able to open it at an important meeting.

I personally have never heard of these happening to anyone, but they are entirely possible, and should be stopped before people start blaming Ubuntu for data corruption.

This is fairly important.

It also could be used as a bad joke... Just make a folder with the name "*Even your computer thinks you are stupid*::::!" on some Windows user NTFS partition - and he can't delete it. :P
