Microsoft has not really gone wrong. If they did, their os wouldn't have more than 80% of the worlds user base. There's nothing wrong with features as long as you can choose which too install/use and they're kept bug-free.
Microsoft went wrong by forcing people to use their features/apps. But they know this; it is part of their marketing model =) However, if there is some viable option like ubuntu that lets the user choose which features to use/install then the competition would force ms to stop their habit of putting apps down the throat of their users...

Features isn't what Microsoft went wrong with Vista.
What Microsoft did wrong with Vista was product keys, product activation, WGA, DRM, phone-home, more restrictive EULA, etc.
Every new version of Windows just gets worse WGA, DRM and EULA.
I don't like that. I moved to Linux.

If you read the official documentation on their website, Ubuntu is still a work in progress. When they are ready they have stated that the naming convention is going away ie. "Hardy Heron", then they will be ready for the masses, and by that time I hope they will have picked the right apps and will stick with what works, but your right the average Joe hate O/S's that change A LOT every major release. But right now I think they are still finding themselves.
+1 even though I think they already have that mind set.

Actually, licensing wasn't what went wrong with vista, it was the media.. The media hyped up that it was slow and buggy, and thats what people thought.
In fact, I actually feel vista does a lot more right then OSX (like you can actually access your photo library in the file browser).
Either way, this isn't an idea.

I don't want to discuss what probably went wrong with Vista, but this idea:
I see so many ideas here to include this or that by default, not only would that be more than one CD, but not every app you need is needed by everyone else. Just because you install it and use it doesn't mean that all the users out there do so, too.
Rather accept that you have to do a little polishing yourself if you use a off-the-shelf OS. If you'd like something that fits you exactly, you have to do that yourself (Gentoo, LFS).
So please consider not including everything by default. Thanks.
