Description
Giving the user a heads up to possible problems as well as (optional) hwdb.ubuntu.com submission will build confidence in Ubuntu's ability to deliver the goods to new users.

Use cases:

"we detect that you have an Nvidia card installed, we will show you how to install the official Nvidia drivers in a second".

"can you hear the sound?"

"we detect you have known troublesome WiFi card installed, a tutorial to ndiswrapper will be shown shortly - in the mean time please connect your PC to a wired Internet connection if you can so we can search for the best driver for you"

This would take a lot of time during installation for one. Two, many people don't want proprietary drivers.

@Massond:

1. that's why it could be optional. If a power user knows what he/she is doing, it could be skipped entirely.

For a completely new user with no linux experience, I suggest that it'd actually add value, show that the installation process is human-friendly and centred around improving their user experience.

2. Even better, of course, if the installer dynamically fetched the required packages where necessary (e.g. "Your graphics card has open source and proprietary drivers available. We recommend ..., but if you'd prefer the other option, we'll make sure it's downloaded and installed before we're done here)

Additional possible use cases:

"This computer seems to be a laptop. FYI we'll set it all up with power management as well as hibernate/suspend options for you. If you would like to configure some external monitors, please click here to run the wizard"

"We notice you have a webcam installed; click here to test it. Did you know Ubuntu has the following applications that will allow you to use your webcam to talk to your friends: Ekiga, aMSN, Pidgin etc. Click here to run a setup wizard for instant messaging"

etc etc - it's all about making the users' lives easier...?

Very nice idea. Could put a check next to each hardware item on the list after the driver was successfully installed.

This can also help isolate issues with grub too.. By sending through the settings before the reboot and have grub die, means that you could have a way for people to report that grub didn't work on their system

@Auzy: if we provide a link to hwdb, we could at least warn some users along the lines of:

"Your motherboard is known to have some problems with Ubuntu - please click here to open a community-based support page for further guidance before we go ahead"

When you finish the installation the system is not up to date.

+1 But instead of (or in addition to?) having it during the install, I think it should be an option on the CD boot menu, "Check my hardware compatibility with Ubuntu".
