Idea #8435: Remove Firefox extensions from repositories

Written by Adys the 12 May 08 at 18:56. Category: Internet & Networking. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Rationale
Firefox extensions are a pain to maintain in the repositories, and very often lag behind when updating them. They should be removed as they are EXTREMELY easy to install from Firefox itself.

Ubufox may be an exception due to its nature though.

(-1) I think there are some security aspects. Extensions in the repository are proved and save. Some external loaded extensions may contain security leaks or code attacking your system.

Sounds a bit like ebay. Can I save on shipping this way? ;-)

Having extensions in the repository is useful for the same reason as other software elements.

Yes, it's not hard to install each one individually but it's so much easier to have them all in one place. Reimaging then become a simple install package list instead of a whole series of manual find and install.

oops i voted + tho i meant -.

extentions in the repo make it easy to install them with a script. tho i wonder if they are synchronised.

does synaptic know when a FF ext is installed?

I think Ubufox is what allows Synaptic to keep track of installed extensions.

Synaptic shouldn't touch the extensions at all really I think. Because Synaptic cant possibly do nearly as good keeping them up to date as firefox.

And I don't really feel the security argument made is actually correct. Because using Synaptic installs the extension for all users. So all users are simultaneously given a security problem. And a patched version will always show up in synaptic long after the official Extension repo.

Big +1
