Idea #8419: Improve Partition tool for install

Written by leight the 12 May 08 at 12:24. Category: Installation. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Rationale
When doing an installation have the following options.
1. Automatic - Install to empty space on hard drive (Will Install along side of existing OS)
2. Automatic - Install use all hard drive (you will lose any data on HDD)
3. Manual (Advanced)
The above is similar to the existing menu.
When using Item 1 root and Home is on same partition, space considerations.
When using item 2 HDD is partitioned into three partitions,
Root ,/, home, and swap.
Manual, as it says.
Partitioning the HDD as in item two would allow users to do a reinstall with out losing any personal data, eg Home drive will remain intact.
This will especially help newer users of Ubuntu, if and when an upgrade damages the original installation, or they damage it while learning how to use Ubuntu

This makes sense. So many users want to do this. It should be added as an easy option.

It wouldn't hurt to have an option (for either 1 Or 2) for the installer to grab from the windows partition the contents of "Program Files" and/or "Documents and Settings" so that the person automatically has all of their documents available.

Also ++ for the comments by mprince

Yes, having a separate home partition is very useful.

yes indeed ... every other distribution does the partitioning with a separate /home - i never understood why ubuntu doesn't
