Description
It's all well and good to include the newest browser in Ubuntu Hardy, even when it's beta. Firefox 3 is aesthetic, fast, safe, and featureful, and undeniably a huge improvement over Firefox 2. However, I experience 5-10 crashes *per day* when visiting common sites like Gmail and Google Reader in Firefox. I'm sorry to have to say this, but for a "stability-centered" release I find this unacceptable and I doubt I'm the only one experiencing these crashes... can Ubuntu find some temporary solution to improve Firefox's stability for the time until Mozilla fixes FF3's stability problems?

EDIT: Other user comments have made it clear to me that this is actually not a widespread problem and might be Flash-related. Thanks for the feedback, guys.

I fully agree....all applications included should be stable versions!

By the way googletoolbar does not work as well!

You can use firefox-2 instead.

Actually.. I'm voting this -1.

Nobody can be blamed for this but yourself. IT CLEARLY says in the release notes why they are using firefox3 even though its a beta

Other known issues
Firefox 3
Ubuntu 8.04 includes Firefox 3.0 beta 5. This was felt to be the best option despite its pre-release status, in light of the extended support lifetime of Ubuntu 8.04 and the importance and complexity of Firefox security updates. Further release candidates and the final release may be considered for post-release updates.

Like okki said, downgrade your firefox if you wish.

Also, LTS is not meant to be a stability centred release, this is where I feel people get it wrong, its a long term support release, so you can still get support on it 2 years down the line. Hence the term "long term support".

Like any new OS, if you want stability, use common sense, and wait a month before installing.

I do agree Ubuntu 8.04 has its share of bugs, but, then again, like I said, businesses should always properly test before upgrading.

I'm using beta5, and haven't seen any crashes.

I only see Flash crashing Firefox, don't see any "real" Firefox crash.

All my Firefox crashes were caused by flshplugin-nonfree and went away after installing the hacked nspluginwrapper attached in this bugreport:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pulseaudio/+bug/192888

If you are using Flash, just give it a try, allthough Flash still crashes really often, my Firefox sessions stay alive now. Without Flash installed I found Firefox3 Beta5 as stable as Firefox2 under Gutsy before.

You're assuming that when it isn't stable on your system, it isn't stable on anyone's system. That's not the case. FF3b5 has not ever crashed on my system, and I'm also using it for Gmail, YouTube (with flashplugin-nonfree) and lots of other websites.

OK guys, thanks for the feedback on this suggestion. Personally my experience with FF3 is rotten so far, but I'm willing to look into whether that might be a plugin issue or something related.

Auzy: I'm not discrediting Ubuntu's choice in including Firefox 3. My suggestion was more asking if there's anything they could do as a temporary fix to FF3's instability, which from this feedback is not as widespread as I had supposed.

Puntarenas: I have the Flash plugin but barely use it, but that might be the problem on the Gmail page. Thanks for the link and suggestion.

Good luck hunt.topher! If you try the nspluginwrapper package, don't forget to reinstall flashplugin-nonfree after installing it.

It is a pity that so much sites today have flash advertisements and I don't want to activate Adblock on community sites, so I watch Flash crash a hundred times a day. :(

I've found that these instructions:

http://www.ubuntugeek.com/fix-for-firefox-crashes-on-flash-contents-when-using- libflashsupport-in-hardy.html

Have COMPLETELY stopped Flash from crashing Firefox 3. I hope this works as well for everyone else as it has for me!
