Solution #1: Save it for the end (Original solution from pre-January 2009 idea)
Written by andruk the 3 May 08 at 04:55.
It would be much better to ask this at the end of the install, that way you don't have to babysit the dist-upgrade, it just does what it can and asks you what to do at the end.

It would simply have to keep a temporary dist-upgrade log of what files were customized (and their updates), and at the end of install, simply go through the dist-upgrade log and offer to replace the files in the log with their updates.

I voted no because I think it should ask you at the beginning. If it can get all the way to the end, then it really didn't NEED to ask you anything. So, because it does NEED to ask somethings, it should examine the system right at the start to foresee any questions it might have.

I do agree, it stinks to babysit something if you don't have to and if they can't ask at the beginning, I would rather the end then speraticly in the middle.

I figured that they would have to scan all the config files that will be overwritten and compare them to the new versions. It currently scans each file and prompts as it comes to possibly customized files, so it should be really easy to just write those to a log and prompt at the end.

It asks you to restart at the end anyway, so it already requires user input at the end. Might as well extend that a little bit instead of rewriting something that already words very well.

Those little stupid questions halting the hours-lasting setup process are killing me!

Do it at the beginning of the install or at the end of it but for gods sake, don't stop the process!

At the end please. After all you are asked to reboot it, so a minute of questions isn't a problem then. My legs still hurt from the stairs after the 8.04 release!
