Compiz-Check(http://forum.compiz-fusion.org/showthread.php?t=8167) is a script that checks your system and sees why you cant run compiz. So, with this script, Ubuntu will say: "Desktop effects couldnt been enabled because X" instead of just "D.E. couldnt been enabled."

This is a GREAT script I wish I had known about a year ago. Fortunately Hardy seems to work fine with Compiz on my laptop and desktop, but I couldn't get it to work using Gutsy or earlier versions.

i would like this script to be ported to windows, so a new user could see if their hardware would support compiz.

in case he's main purpose is to run compiz of course

then he could make the appropriate hardware changes/upgrades before downloading an ubuntu or other linux version.

that could save the user a few days at the forum and a first not so good experience and the ability to make him aware of compatible hardware.

Good idea. My ancient Thinkpad T30 is not capable of running compiz, yet both Guty Gibbon and Hardy Heron installed it anyway. It would have been nice if the installed had checked, instead of me removing the packages, as they were useless to me on that system.

I agree..., but I don't think it should explicitly tell you that it's an X problem. For back-tracing the problem, this would useful knowing the package that is causing compiz-fusion not to work or work properly. If you don't want to bother trying to fix it, you shouldn't be show technical details. Where if you feel the need to fix it, you just click "show technical details".
