Description
Whenever I am running a fullscreen game, I sometimes realize that I had my volume set too loud, but I am only able to notice this once it starts, and I can't adjust it unless I completely exit the game... I'm not completely sure if this happens with all fullscreen programs, but so far it is a problem with every fullscreen game I've tried, and its a bit annoying...
so yeah, let us adjust our volume from within such programs...

You can set volume managing hot keys. What about:
alt+f1 = down
alt+f2 = up
alt+f3 = mute

I have dedicated keys for adjusting volume and it works fine and out of the box, but when I'm on fullscreen they don't do nothing. So +1 for this.

What I generally do is to Alt+Tab to get to the Desktop, adjust volume there and get back to the game.

knightmarex: this does not always work if you play games using wine...

It probably has something to do with LibSDL. SDL completely grabs keyboard and mouse, and while volume buttons are treated as normal buttons in gnome it's obvious that GNOME can't react. Similar problem is with darkening screen in some SDL games (enemy territory, quake). GNOME should probably somehow try to be higher in hierarchy than SDL. I am afraid it would be non-trivial to achieve. It would depend on X giving higher privileges in keypresses grabbing to some applications.
