Description
Ok so im not sure if this is the right place for this..but im just thinking out loud.
a device that will let your torrents downloading but yu can switch off your pc! torrents carry on downloading. External USB hard drives are available freely these days. So maybe something in buntu that will let the juice flow from the USB to the hard drive after the pc has been switched off.
Maybe an option in the shutdown menu..."torrents"...which shuts down everything else but gives the cpu like 3% power consumption compared to normal...
...oh and this has "green" written all over it!
Bragging rights over Windows and Macs? check!!!

combination of specific router and usb disk will do the job... but that crap with 3% of cpu power sounds lik sci-fi to me

that was just an idea...the 3% thing as youd need the cpu to process torrents!!
I know its doable via method you stated....but i was thinking for someone who might want this ( I do)....maybe it might be implemenantable out of the box...instead spending more money...buying usb and whatnot!!!

To do this, you'd literally have to find a way to bypass the fact that a torrent program requires the OS to run. The general rule is that an Operating System cannot be loaded with the very minimal power a computer uses when its off.
The boot process of a computer also needs to be considered.
1) BIOS is Read
2) POST performed
3) Boot Loader activated
4) OS begins loading itself
One of these steps cannot come before the other. The steps always need to be perform in same sequence upon startup and must be done in the exact reverse of this sequence for restarting or shutting down (except it would unloading these resources). So if the computer is shut down, the stuff that would allow something like bit torrent to run goes straight down with it.

Never going to happen since it's not an OS problem but a hardware problem.
It's already possible without the need of an OS. My ethernet disc can download files at specific times and make them available for download without the need of my PC. I can even remotely log in to it and add torrents. :)

They could make the os, shutdown all other(not needed) processes and then set the CPU to a lower frequency and unmount discs that is not needed. perhaps use runlevels.
