"fast" is relative.
How fast your system starts up also depends on the various tools, programs and services you run.
So install a tool like "boot up manager" (aka. BUM) or sysv-rc-conf and look at some topics on ubuntuforums.

Examples:

Everyone wants it faster, the idea should include how to make it faster.

I agree with Koenputer. "I want my ubuntu faster" is NOT an idea.

I am tagging this duh.

Anyways, hardy seems to boot faster than gutsy to me.

I want to add one thing to Koenputer's and brunovecchi's opinion: You're to late. Hardy is out, and apart from security fixes (which this isn't) nothing will be changed.

We should be making ideas for 8.10, not 8.04 now.
