Most webcam drivers are installed already... at least mine works out of the box.

When your printer is installed automatically you've got a message to tell you that the printer is ready, same message could be shown for the webcam...

You were probably lucky in that your printer is one that will work with the drivers preinstalled in Ubuntu. The problem is not many webcam manufacturers will make drivers for linux, or tell the developers how the webcam works, so not many webcams can be supported. It is the curse of propriety software.

If the webcam doesn't work then +1 for a message.
If it does then there's no need for a message. Plugging a webcam in means "I want to use my webcam in webcam-type software", thus popping up a message that it is available in those apps should be confusing in terms of "What else would I want to do with it?"
Notice I said SHOULD, ie. this is what a computing experience should be like and is what should be strived for. Notification messages are a short-term hack whilst webcam and driver makers get their act sorted out to make things work properly (which may or may not involve the destruction of non-free software ;) )

edm1 > HP have a lot of printers which work fine with ubuntu automatically. Vadim P. said exactly the opposite of your comment on webcam support :)
wearzeep > Which one ?
Warbo > "Your webcam is ready to be use" show that ubuntu have seen your webcam, that's important for user, i think.

Webcam support for Ubuntu is no good, which is odd: some cool stuff could be done with 'em, like video surveillance, video conference, etc.
I plugged in my Logitech QuickCam for Notebooks. Nothing happened. Installed Easycam from a French site. Couldn't detect it. Installed Camorama. /dev/video0 didn't exist. Tried listing the USB devices. Unknown device. Then I quit. (Gutsy)
Several sites said that regular Logitech QuickCam was indeed supported, but I'm not convinced.

Webcams are important features these days. It would be great if anyone can help to improve this.

I want a webcam to work too. Which webcam does Vadim use that works "out of the box"? I read somewhere that gOS has some software and it runs with ezonics webcams, although I have never seen an ezonics product anywhere. I want to use tokbox or skype video someday.
