Description
I got this idea more as a joke but kind of grown on me and I think
it's so strange it could actually work...
First of all, what I mean with "lifestyle" magazines.
Lifestyle magazines are everything from Playboy through Cosmopolitan to The Economist.
So idea is that Cannonical pairs with one or more of this magazines and creates a "special" Ubuntu theme based on these magazine. So let's say there would be Ubuntu Playboy theme with desktop picture of playboy bunnies, an rss feed preinstaled for news from their site and so on... The same for Cosmopolitan or the Economist... It doesn't really matters which it is. The point is that the CD with this "special" edition would be sold with this magazine. So Ubuntu would get a lot of new users...
So why not anything else rather lifestyle magazines. Well this magazines are sold globally and are usually printed in local language. Well Economist isn't but I put it there to prove my point.
And don't forget National Geographic I can already see a good "special" edition of Ubuntu for it.
I think that almost in all cases Kubuntu would better because all of this editions would be built on eye candy plus KDE looks more like Windows than Gnome.
Please write why you don't or do like this idea which magazines (with global coverage) would you recomend.
Which would use Gnome / KDE / Xfc desktop...

I'm totally aware that this is a bit weird idea, but its one way how to get those that never even herd of anything else then Windows

Sounds interesting enough.

Interesting but....

Cosmopolitan?Playboy?Let's be serious.
A business magazine will do (In Romania we have Saptamana Financiara/The Finance Week)
But why wouldn't it be promoted in magasines like PCWorld/Chip?
I think they would be more suited...

+1 tough ;-)

I forgot to mention that, Those who interest them self in PC
already know about Ubuntu and its forks. This idea is about how to raise "global" awareness about Ubuntu. If Ubuntu seriously
wants to be concurrent to Windows it has to become more known to those that normally don't care about computer much as long as it works. So that's why i think Ubuntu should work with this magazines. And it's fairly simple to lure this kind of users away from Windows. You just give them a bit of eye candy and stability and they'll sty Ubuntu for the rest of their lives...

i love this idea. let me know if i can help.

it might be a good idea to include magazines like Boy's Life (boy scouts of the usa), 2600, Heavy Metal, etc. People who read those magazines tend to be fanboys. Cosmo, Maxim and Playboy are good ideas too, but people are more likely to just pick up an issue every now and again than be dedicated fans.

On the same note, it would be good also to have like a Ubuntu stand on PC Stores, that says something like "Grab your OS for FREE" and have Ubuntu cd's available for people to grab and take home.

Well... The idea of connecting Ubuntu to the lifestyle thing is nice, but it shouldn't be implemented that way - that's too cheap and obvious. I'd like to see the initial idea post re-visited.
Lifestyle aren't just direct ads and so on. Anyways, an advertising company shouldn't be that agressive and annoying. It doesn't work that way nowadays.

Not a bad idea, however Ubuntu then maybe needs to get finally a competitive design (it's looks way worse then Vista or OSX IMHO)

I thingk it's not very good idea.
it will attract lot of people without the "knowledge". they will instal ubuntu just because "it sounds cool" and then start complaining, because ... do ubuntu really need this sort of users?

I like the idea.
+1

I agree with SchwarzeKrause. I usually consider CDs I get in magazines like spam (think AOL).

Why should we want lifestyle readers in our community?

If you look under bug number 1. It says that the biggest problem is that windows has too many users.
But many of them use Windows just because they don't know about the alternative. And big portion of this population are readers of "lifestyle magazines". Let say that they don't really care about their computer, they have other priorities.
I, as an student of political science know that if you want to succeed at getting people on your side you have to sell your ideology as it was theirs. So , if you want to get those who read "lifestyle" magazines you have to represent Ubuntu as part of the lifestyle ideology of certain "lifestyle" magazine.
And yes this could be implemented on other areas as well, I proposed "lifestyle" magazines, because they are published all over the world, the population that reads them is not so interested in computers and they have very developed ideology through which you can get to them.

Well we now have Christian ubuntu, muslim ubuntu, satanic ubuntu...If a relevant theme can be knocked up for each magazine...hold on. Wow. This would be an opportunity for a lifestyle magazine to promote itself via cosmobuntu or whatever. I bet they'd love it!

After all, a theme or two, a tweaked firefox with the magazines links etc...rss feed into their news and blogs and what not.

Why not offer this as a service to magazines? What a way to get promoted! Your own tailored OS!

Yep, its as nutty as a frootcake, but y'know, I think its crazy enough to work, especially if its done as a service to the mags etc. Hmmmmm.....verrrry interesting!

I bet a lot of archetype slashdotters would switch to Playboy-buntu in a blink. Be sure to package pornview for it.

Would the release be called things like "Busty Bunny" and "Voluptuous Vixen"? :D

I can't wait for Dapper Daytrader or Intrepid Investor either, though Fiesty Fashionist isn't too bad either. If we're talking about UberGamer Magazine, I vote Gutsy Ganker!
