Description
I don't know if this is more appropriately the job of the window manager, but I would like the sidebar of the window I am in to calculate the percentage of used space. I think along with "permissions" this is the most oft-used part of the Properties window. Properties can be a pain because you can't get to it from the folder you are in (ok, there's al+ enter but how many of us have memorized that? Besides, it only works if the item is already selected, which often it isn't.). When copy/pasting big files where there is a concern for running out of space (and isn't that often why we are moving big files?) it seems silly to go up a directory, right click to get to Properties to see how much space is left, go back to the directory you were just in to paste more. It would also be a good reminder to have that percentage there so we realize when we are getting close to filling up the disk. Better to see that you are at 98% usage when you are not in the middle of downloading a 10 gig file, no?

The only downside I can see to this is the calculation could tax older machines. This should be solved by giving it a low priority from the start.

Hmm, it appears I was a little confused when I wrote this. It should apply not for the item selected, but for the window you are in. As far as I can see, when there is nothing selected, Properties is grayed out. I am using Kubuntu now but I think it is the same in Gnome.

In GNOME, it doesn't display a percentage, but at the bottom of the file browser, it does tell you how much disk space you have left in that given drive if you don't have any files selected. Which I think is more appropriate, since when you select a file, that number at the bottom of the file browser switches to how much space that file takes up.

So I don't really think a percentage is all that useful compared to what's currently implemented (at least in GNOME). Of course, if someone really wanted a percentage, the option should be available to them.

The amount of space left is already displayed in Nautilus's status bar. As for the percentage, I personally don't need it.

Add the percentage: fine.

I think it'd also be useful to see not only how much disk space is used, free and total, but also used/free/total for your disk quota, if quotas are in force.

More interesting than that, it'd probably also be interesting to see what's using the disk space; I think there's talk about integrating the disk usage viewer into nautilus :)
