I would like to propose the idea of having a Tor-relay as an option in Ubuntu, with the default setting of "non-exit" operation if the user have a internet connection of 20 kilobytes/s or more.

About "non-exit" node: It basically means that the service the user is running, passes along the traffic to another tor node.
It doesnt use the users internet connection to access the "web/email/etc".

Ofcourse there are security concerns but there are "remedies":

Everyone who are concerned over ABUSE or LEGAL matters, can read these:

Legal: http://www.torproject.org/eff/tor-legal-faq.html.en

The Tor blog is quite interesting:

And ofcourse their wiki is quite informative:

(It should be noted that this is one of those ideas you get when you cant sleep and think, that would be amazing for freedom of the net/speech, please disregard this or get inspiration however you feel about it. I search a bit, but didnt find any ideas about tor so.. and btw sorry for my bad english)

I think that it would be good if Ubuntu worked to increase free speech, digital freedom, privacy, anonymity, safety, security, cryptography, etc.

Tor should not be enabled by default though.

Also encouraging people to use Tor in non-endpoint mode undermines the project. Tor won't work without endpoints, people do stupid things to undermine the proper functions of systems often enough out of ignorance, no use encouraging people.

Eldmannen: I guess i didnt my self clear, i do mean that it should be as in the Describtion. _optional_. However it should be a real easy point and click thingy. the setup for the .torrc is really minimal for non exit nodes. the gui and the security messures are missing, and what not else ;)
(sitting here and simplyfing "a tad")

peterjs: a contraire sir, you and i, as we sit and discuss this matter is proof enough. We started somewhere with computers and what not, and "suddenly" along the line we are "suddenly" here. Is there a suddenly at all? I dont think so, we use, we learn we are informed, as we are cognitive beings we look either our self or the information finds us or beacouse its intresting or, we have a need. Since, mor people become aware, the more things benefit. I think I made my point.
