Description
How often you use memtest+ ? nor more than one or two time in whole year. So why not remove the link in grub and make a link in the system menu like "Check my memory at next boot "

With that the boot menu will be more clear.

I thinks 90% of non-geek user never use this tool.

Remove from boot loader? Uhmm... ok maybe.
But it MUST keep it on the LiveCD.

I bought a computer, and memtest86+ saved my life. A stick was faulty, and it caused me headache, and memtest saved me.

Putting it in the system menu as you suggested is kludgey. It would require replacing either the MBR or menu.lst such that memtest ran on the next boot. Additionally, it would require memtest were re-written to replace the original MBR or menu.lst after it ran.

Additionally, memory errors are often the cause of kernel panics and other errors that could halt the system before the user even sees the Ubuntu desktop, but that don't occur until sometime after grub. The grub menu is the only place this makes sense.

I would suggest manually changing your menu.lst file such that grub is the absolute bottom item, or restore the default setting that hides the menu unless a user presses ESC.

I think you are really screwing up those 10% of non-geeks who would eventually need to use it.

It's not easy to install memtest86+ on your own. So having it in grub makes life simpler even for non-geeks that for example bought new memory for their computer and want to test it.

Maybe you should post this idea to microsoft, who have a memory tester integrated too?

There is no logical reason for removing this. Its not worth the 100kb of memory saved

If a stick of ram goes bad, just booting into your OS can cause damage. Memtest86+ is a tool that is needed most when you can access the OS least. Leave it where it is, or you make it useless.

geek or not geek, damaged memory really CAN prevent your system from booting. thats why some "geek" had the idea of putting an entry into the GRUB menu in the first place.
removing it would be rather dumb, imo. plus, if the computer wont work properly, most people are going to call a "geek" and if it does work, no non-geek would ever want to press ESC on boot...?
