Description
when you right click on the desktop the last choice you get is change desktop background, and it takes you to the background tab in appearance preferences. not sure if this is intentional but i think people are smart enough to notice the background tab when they click on appearance preferences

Just to be EXACTLY like Windows?
It makes sense to change only the desktop background when you are on the desktop. The other options (Themes, Fonts, Visual effects...) don't really belong to the desktop options I think.

are u kidding, i right click the desktop atleast once a week looking to change my res or something. maybe if the backgroud was the default while right clicking the desktop, with other options attached. People are human(linux for humans, wutnow) and most of them have used windows before. Its a good idea and just because windows has implemented a similar feature does not make it a bad thing.

Playing devil's advocate here. Since Nautilus is responsible for drawing the desktop background, maybe there should be a menu option for Nautilus preferences as well.

"not sure if this is intentional but i think people are smart enough to notice the background tab when they click on appearance preferences." If someone wants to change his background and sees "Change Desktop Background" he will click it (and then of course notice that it brought up the appearance program). However if it said "appearance preferences" or something like that, the user wouldn't know if those preferences include background. It's much better the way it is.
kenden, it doesn't matter it if't EXACLT like Windows if it's the best way to do it. This isn't, but still your argument is irrelevant.

It took me a good 6+ months to get rid of the habit of right-clicking the desktop to change the resolution.
So copying Windows would have helped transitioning.
But now I am used to it, it seems unlogical to have those preferences on the desktop.
If it is not the best way to do it, copying Windows to make Ubuntu beginners more comfortable is probably not a good idea.

I agree, but how about instead of Appearance preferences, it says "Desktop Appearance". I believe the name is best when it matches the task or process you want a user to be able to do.

Yes, this needs to be changed to something else! A friend of me called me to ask about how to do something that is actually quite easy. But she didn't find it, because it had nothing to do with the desktop background, even though that's where the option was.
