Rationale
I like to visit the Ubuntu.com homepage frequently, in order to know the number of days to next release, to get some news about the project, to learn more about the system, but it seems a photograph.

I imagine there are lots of resources on Internet with that information, but they are not linked from Ubuntu homepage. For example, Ubuntu Brainstorm is a great idea, but it is not linked neither!

I think, homepage should be a lively commonplace to Ubuntu users and potential new users. It should have:

* News about the operating system and the project, new features just implemented, programmers required for..., etc., etc.
* A complex search engine for documentation only related to Ubuntu. It could search into the docs (help.ubuntu.com), forums, wikis, tutorials...
* Link to related and useful projects: Brainstorm, cdimage, Ubuntu Rescue Remix, getdeb.net, Forums... It could resemble labs.google.com
* Resources: backgrounds, screen-savers, useful programs, hotows...

I think, people could give more recommendations. Ubuntu is a great project and the web face of it should reflect that ;)

Yeah, it would be nice it list software, and I can install them with apt-url.

It would also be nice with a blog that explain what is happening and what is new...

there are lots of useful pages and "services" around ubuntu.com brainstorm is only on.
Every time I want to check for a beta I have to navigate to the beta page though a search engine or a it news site (me lazy) because there is no simple link.

I find that the current Ubuntu homepage is very austere. It lacks screenshots, news and things that could be attractive to the user

Likewise, I think the design should be "updated" in order to be more user-friendly. At the time being, it looks quite like a mess, and I think we should do much better in order to make the site attractive. Take a look at sites like www.linuxmint.com to see that the design can be much more attractive (I'm not talking about the content, nor do I ask to "copy" this theme, but I find it more pleasant than the Ubuntu homepage)

This is another proof of the fact that the Ubuntu website should be improved. Much ubuntu-linked things exist but aren't talked about on the ubuntu homepage.

In fact, navigating the Ubuntu website is pointless. You are far better off Googling the section of the site you want and this is frankly unacceptable. The site needs to reworked so all the information is there and all the links to the other sites are there.

If you don't believe that the site is terrible as it stands now I challenge you to do tests. Sit someone down who has never used the Ubuntu website and give them a list of sections of the site to find or pieces of information. I guarantee you that they will struggle.

The aesthetics of the site are also poor. Go look at the Firefox website, the Miro website and the Songbird website. All of which are first class examples of open source projects with nice looking websites. This is the level of aesthetic loveliness that Ubuntu should aspire to have.

Agreed, +1. I often find it is so difficult finding all the useful info on their page that it is much simpler just doing a google search. I also only go there for updates. I find that the info on what you get with each release is sometimes not so easy to track down. I usually linger on the main page, when I am there, to see if there is any other useful information and there never seems to be.

winamp.com, though it is cluttered and ugly, I think is a good model of a lively site.
