Description
All the packages in the software repository should include a URL hyperlink to the official website of the software.

So when you read about the software, you can click on the link to get to the official homepage, for more information.

Developer comments
This is in progress: The latest packaging rules explicitly ask to add the homepage URL of the software to the package. You can already see the homepage URL of some packages in Hardy Heron via the "Add/Remove applications" program.

Makes sense. We have to make it as easy as possible for users to find out what they are installing

Voted yes.

Most packages in the software repository should include a link to the official website of the software.

This is a very good idea. More than once I wished this was implemented while looking for software in Synaptic. +1

Good idea. Never thought of it before but it makes sense.

And easy to implement. I would only add the caveat that it not be required for inclusion.

Great idea. It would be good not only for users, but also for developers. More traffic to official websites would mean more support (e.g. donations, human resources, etc.).

And don't forget to make sure the links are clickable! Highlight-copy-switch to Web Browser-paste-enter is not very fun.

Then there should be a button next to the URL with the catch "report dead link"

A good idea to enforce this! Then we can tell where our software is coming from.

I've also suggested that synaptic automatically convert URLs into Hyperlinks. I guess it's implied with this idea.

It's here anyway:
