Ubuntu, debian, mandrake, red hat, yellow dog, windows, Leopard..

The only reason you would do this is to improve google searches

It has become a quite widely known trademark. So changing it now would not be smart.

But i have some fear, that the term "Ubuntu" cheapens down by becoming primarily a term for pieces of software and software philosophy and software "ethics" instead of what it actually means.

hey atos38, are you a billionaire ?
In case, please talk to Canonical !!!

Proposing to change it, indicates the person has no idea what it means and why it is relevant. It isn't just because it "sounds neat" or a conglomeration of words, it matches the ethos of open-source.

Yes, very good idea:

kubuntu became ubuntu
xubuntu became ubuntu
edubuntu became ubuntu
...ubuntu became ubuntu

maybe ubuntu became ubuntulinux

Sure and while we're at it, why don't we ask change the name Earth to La La Lucy? That sounds nice and pretty and EVERYBODY already knows that name!
Great idea >=/

I would rather call it "Lucy" than african name.
I have nothing against ethos of open-source but why does it have to be african?
What’s African contribution to this system?

They didn't choose to name the distribution after who made the most contributions to the build or developement. They chose the word ubuntu for the ideology behind it. please check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ubuntu_%28philosophy%29 to read more about the philosophy behind the word ubuntu.

revzoe wrote on the 18 Apr 08 at 06:53
African contribution is:

1) The word exactly means the philosophy and goal of this distribution.
2) Where the money behind Cononical, as well as the idea for this distribution, came from.

The very suggestion to change the name "because it is african" shows a deep lack of understanding what the core ethos of Ubuntu is.

Some people do not care for ethos.
They just want stable, secure, fast and user friendly system.

People who 'just want a stable, secure, fast and user friendly system' do not care about the name.

Not necessarily.

contribute your idea towards development of ubuntu and not to its name

No way!

Ubuntu is a name meaning so open-source, i think there's no way to replace it!

I think everybody knows what Ubuntu means... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ubuntu_(philosophy)
