I agree that it would better if the manufacturer would make one. But this manufacturer does not.
There are groups actually working on hardware drivers for Linux, and this idea is intended for them. As gadgets like the Digital Photo Key Chain are popular, such drivers are important for the large scale adoption of Ubuntu.
Actually, it could become another selling point of Ubuntu. Although this gadgets is popular and cool, the Windows software that is provided by the manufacturer has a low usability. It should be easy to design better software for Linux (e.g. making the photo storage map accessible from Nautilus).
