Idea #6828: Remove Kubuntu (and Xubuntu)!!

Written by bozzochet the 11 Apr 08 at 08:10. Category: System. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Rationale
Why these different version, with also different web sites (with different quality of them)?!
Same repositories, same core of system, same almost all!!!
Many people use Amarok, for example, on Ubuntu and many people use Synaptic on Kubuntu!
I suppose there could be only 1 distro, Ubuntu, with the users choicing which graphical manager using and over it which programs and tools using...
The only "split" I would mantain is in the downloadable CD images (not DVD): every user will download trough repositories any additional package he wants (like YET we are doing) AFTER the main installation avoiding to download, in the ISO download, 3 times (Gnome, KDE, XFCE) the same stuffs (stuff that make the "same" things)... The DVD iso, instead could be for the persons dosn't have bandwitch problem and want to have ALL his own DVD.

I totally agree. Developement has to centered around ONE thing EVEN if it means (it doesnt have to) of some functionality.

First, this is in no way a duplicate of Idea #188.

Second, this idea is very myopic. The differences among the *buntus is more than the default applications that get installed. The differences among GMOME, KDE, and Xfce are not trivial. Why bog down GNOME with loading a bunch of Qt libraries (or bog down KDE with loading a bunch of GTK libraries)?

Speaking in regard to Kubuntu: some people prefer the KDE environment, not just the KDE apps. I'm one of those people. I started using Ubuntu, but was not comfortable in Linux until I started using Kubuntu. I never got the feel for GNOME. It just didn't suit me. Put bluntly: if Kubuntu were dropped, I would find another distro.
