Idea #6766: 8.04 series needs a repair install option

bug This idea is a duplicate of Idea #1230: System Restore.
Written by Auzy the 10 Apr 08 at 07:38. Category: Installation. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Rationale
I realised today my KDE4 kubuntu 8.04 beta CD does not have a repair option.

The only way to fix my grub after vista corrupted it was screwing around with grub-install. Windows (and OSX), and have repair mechanisms for ages. Otherwise, the only option for most people is reinstall

We need to ensure *buntu all have a repair for at the very least grub. If Vista killed my grub, it means it will kill many others. And if we cant have a way to fix small issues with buntu like windows can, we may as well close up shop now, because you wont attract any new users.

I believe I saw an option to repair on ubuntu (I may be wrong), but Kubuntu definately needs it asap.

Ummm ... don't know about Kubuntu but for Ubuntu, isn't that one of the roles of the LiveCD? I used it for that once.

Yeah, my kde4 live CD, despite being the beta, does not have it

to late for 8.04

Yes, the live CD should have a "Repair bootloader" option, and a "Scan disk" option.

It should be able to automatically search for problems and fix them.

And yes, that should be possible with Vista (don't know about OSX)

This is a good idea but why do some people insist on this sort of hyperbole when suggesting things?

"And if we cant have a way to fix small issues with buntu like windows can, we may as well close up shop now, because you wont attract any new users."

Do they really believe it will start a panic and force change even faster?

No rs3york. I'm just pointing out windows has it. And it is an important addition. In windows I have needed it a few times, and in linux, you need it even more because Grub getting overwritten is a common issue. I don't think it will start a panic, but its important to emphasise, that its important to add so in 6 months time when a new windows gets released, we don't have thousands of users wondering why they cant repair kubuntu.

And Ubuntu live CD has it already, so is it really too late to add? Not sure..

I had to fix kubuntu yesterday with the liveCD in the dodgiest possible way.

Nitro, the other idea is in regards to improving the repair, this idea mainly revolves around the fact they seem to have forgotten it entirely in kubuntu 8.04
