Description
The Intel Atom series CPUs are expected to sell in millions and being the first mainstream distro to be fully optimized for it can give Ubuntu a huge headstart in usability and marketshare for mobile PC and dominestic applicances markets (think Asustek EEE like laptops, Blu-Ray players, HDTVs, domotica).
The reason for a different architecture type, instead of the generic 32-bit x86 architecture is offcourse that all sortware can be compiled and optimized for the (in order) Atom CPU, offering better performance, while keeping the huge amount of software available in the Ubuntu repo's (they could use a i386 fallback system).

Intel Atom CPUs seem well suited for a terminal-oriented machine, the scope of LTSP :)

Yes, it is x86 compatible processor. But... it has some new power-saving modes and other features. They are unique and have no analogues in other Intel Processors.

You don't need a whole CPU architecture to implement power saving in a CPU. This can easily be implemented in existing kernel functionality.
