Description
I download 1 million packages... more or so software, all configured all tuned up, and when it's gone... it's gone. Go back to google, find, search, retrieve... software, learn how to configure, go to forums, find out how and so on. This problem exists in windows, but the thing is i don't care about them :). There should be a way (easy way)to backup the configuration of ubuntu, along with settings, software names, links to the software, where i've put my buttons, what wallpapers i've used if i had somthing in a folder other than standard.... ubuntu files. links to the backup disks... like insert backup disk no 5 for ex.

Now let me go to detail:
The backup system should be composed of different steps:

1)What should i backup?---- and i don't want a list of directories. I want to actually know what i am storing. DC++ settings, Mozilla settings and themes, or without themes, or without themes and settings, maybe i just want the same add-ons.(detailed for common apps, and just the option to back up the software name and where the system should look for uptdates/ install, and if i want to save the settings too)

2)Make the first cd/dvd with the likns, specs, names, plug-ins list, download sites etc.
3)Make the rest of the cd/dvd's with the settings, configs etc, even documents, pictures... downloaded stuff etc(except music, movies.... usually big files), even maybe partially downloaded stuff so i can continue later on.

Restore should be like this:
what do i want to restore?
1) documents
2) incomplete downloads
3) do i want ubuntu to import my old desktop layout, optinos system settings, download wallpapers again or styles, buttons back etc.
4) software.... and automaticly download & install new versions of the software and/or drivers( take me to the website if not possible otherwise), and step by step import or copy old settings to the home dir or wherever needed.(maybe have some quick feature where if i download software from some place the app/package can store this info for when i backup so it knows where to take me).

That's all... thanks for reading if you had the patience to get here!

i was being sarcastic actually and no, english is not my first language but i am pretty good @ it, not to mention the fact that i don't really care how i spell as long as i get my message across, and thanks for the plus! I'm sorry to offend you with my bad... english(spelling/expressions/whatever) but you have to admit it would be nice to see that happen (what i said above) right?

There should be a clear and easy way to extract the information needed to re-install a system. That would be one generated file that includes a list of packages to be installed, and ideally whatever configuration has been applied to them. Then, after doing a base install it should be possible to provide this file to a program, which would then build the system to the same as the backed-up one

Having all the preferences in one folder is a first step to that. So vote for :
